Not exactly the most "original-looking" fly. But I can't find many flies in the guide that look like variations on houseflies. If I'm not mistaken, the common housefly is musca domestica, but the two photos of muscids in the guide look more "exotic". Where do I start?

You could try...
... by looking for images of Muscina. The European ones are somewhat similar though have a slightly more distinct pattern of grey markings.

Thanks for the suggestion. It certainly resembles Muscina stabulans, but the leg and scutellum colors aren't quite right, I think. My image doesn't show enough detail anyway for a positive ID - but at least I know in which general direction to look.
