Seaside Grasshopper-erythristic morph? - Trimerotropis maritima - female

Seaside Grasshopper-erythristic morph? - Trimerotropis maritima - Female
Presque Isle State Park, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 4, 2006
Size: about 40 mm
This grasshopper was found in sandy, sparsely vegetated shoreline habitat. At one point, it interacted with a Seaside Grasshopper (Trimerotropis maritima), flashing and signaling with the hind tibiae. Perhaps an erythristic Seaside? I've never seen one marked like this though.

Trimerotropis maritima
Hi, I've been coming back to this one since it was posted, and it is a remarkable specimen. There is no doubt that it is a female T. maritima, since no other similar specis exists in the area, and that male is clearly mating with her (or at least getting very close to doing so). The really interesting thing about this one is that the coloration matches that on which the genus Eximacris was based. Two species were described in that genus, one E. superbum was based almost certainly on a specimen of Spharagemon cristatum that was colored like this. The other, E. phenax was based on a Trimerotropis of this color, probably T. maritima (just like this one). This is a rare find, and a beautiful one. Check out:

thank you!
I had all but given up on this critter. Thanks for the interesting remarks. I figured it was not a common variation at all, as I've not seen one like it since.
