Orange-striped Oakworm - Anisota senatoria

Orange-striped Oakworm - Anisota senatoria
Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
September 16, 2006
Size: 2"
This species has become invasive in Rhode Island and in isolated areas have completely defoliated Oaks. They often feed in areas which were already damaged by Gypsy Moth Caterpillars ... further weakening the Oak trees. One will often come across armies of them crossing roads. They become pests around homes and countless thousands accumulate in swimming pools.

What to do?
What are you sapposed to do if you have them?

Oakworm Control
Hi RLV. I'd imagine that by now they are no longer a major problem. If you have them next year, contact your local Cooperative Extension Service at your local University or College. Spray programs and perhaps biological controls are available to control these pests.

Thanks,

Michelle

Caution on the biological controls
The one they set loose to attack the gypsy moths turns out to be killing all our big beautiful silk moths.
