Squash Bug - Piezogaster calcarator - male

Squash Bug - Piezogaster calcarator - Male
Doddridge County, West Virginia, USA
September 14, 2004
This specimen was identified two years ago as an Archimerus alternatus...has something changed since then? I don't see it in the guide at all.

There's at least one other image (below)
but no page yet - I'll make one. Who identified yours? Was it someone on BugGuide? It looks like a good match, but I don't know this genus at all.

Eric Eaton
...identified the picture on my pbase gallery and suggested I submit it to Bug Guide. :)

Ok, here's an update
- trying to dig up more info on this genus I found an interesting comment on this one (below). It seems Archimerus has been reclassified. So I think all these belong in Piezogaster - maybe in species calcarata. I hope Eric will see and comment more on this - for now I'll move them to P. calcarata - easy enough to change if incorrect.

In Limbo:-)
I heard from an expert on Coreidae, and he told me that this species won't be in that genus for very long. It apparently defies lumping with existing genera, so perhaps it will have its very own eventually. For now, the name Hannah assigned is correct. Slater & Baranowski list it as Archimerus.
