Tan Walking Stick - Diapheromera covilleae - male

Tan Walking Stick - Diapheromera covilleae - Male
Organ Mountains foothills, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 6, 2006
Collected by day by sweeping and beating various shrubs. Did not measure, but it was 60 - 80 mm judging by ruler segment in one photo.

The insect was dead or nearly so in this photo, having been kept too long awaiting a photo session. It was posed on this vegetation, which is unlikely to be a host plant for this species. I note that, like the Greasew*ood Walkingstick, this one has small horns above its eyes, so I suspect they are closely related

sorry I took so long to notice this one
This is male nymph of D. covilleae as you suspected. It probably came off of a Creosote Bush Larrea divaricata.

Moved from Walkingsticks.

Thank you, David.
Good to have it nailed down by someone who knows what they're looking at :-)
