Moved from The Casebearers.

This is a new species of Cryp
This is a new species of Cryptocephlaus for North America! I will see if I can find out if it is one of the Antillean described species or completely new. The elytra closely match C. maccus from Arizona but the pronotum is all wrong

Cryptocephalinae
Hi,
yes this is a beetle. This is a case-bearer from the subfamily Cryptocephalinae from the leaf beetles. Maybe genus Pachybrachus. Not sure on that one though. Maybe someone else.

Could it possibly be...
Trirhabda confusa????

Please someone who knows better, advise.

Charles

not Trirhabda
Hi Charles.
No it is not Trirhabda. Trirhabda is in the subfamily Galerucinae. These have the antenna close together between the eyes unlike this beetle which is in the subfamily Cryptocephalinae. The visible pygidium (back) is a clear indication towards this subfamily. The treadlike antenna and unsculptured appaerence show it must be close to the genus Cryptocephalus (Clytrini and Chlamisini used to be separate subfamilies). The genus Cryptocephalus has the pronotum wider at the base, while Pachybrachus has it about equal at both ends. Therefor my guess was for Pachybrachus...this is a bit subtle though and there are some other smaller genera as well.
Hope this helps

Rob.
This helps a lot, this is the first time I have seen these leaf beetles, they have an interesting look about them and I will try to get more.

Charles
