big carabid - Pasimachus

big carabid - Pasimachus
Organ Mountains foothills, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 9, 2006
Size: 23 mm
I spotted this big black carabid hoofing it across a low granite boulder toward a dark assassin bug that was advancing from the other direction, possibly each checking out the dinner potential of the other. At a distance of two feet or less the bug halted and the beetle veered off 60 or 70 degrees. I was there to grab it. Well IDed to genus by Dave Richman at NMSU, by comparison with specimens in the university's collection, and by comparison with bugguide images.

I collected a number of these beetles in my twelve pitfall traps over the course of five days, turning most of them loose.
