But I think this is a female Red Rock Skimmer (Paltothemis lineatipes). See here. Like Randy, I know mainly eastern stuff, so I ID this western stuff with books and internet images.

Finally got my book: Kathy Biggs' "Dragonflies of California..." but am generally uncertain about doing my own IDs. This does appear to be the same as the female Red Rock Skimmer in the book. Thanks!

Not sure the lighting could be better. I know eastern dragons fairly well western stuff not so good.
