8mm black histerid - Saprinus

Size: about 8 mm
This was by far the largest hister beetle I collected on my New Mexico trip. It was among a dozen or so smaller ones taken on this date from my pitfall traps baited with rotting jackrabbit guts.

Note the fineness of the elytral punctuation.
