Hypocaccus sp. ?

I'm not sure, but it could be an Hypocaccus sp. or at least an Histeridae from the subfamily Saprininae.

Do you mean both beetles?

They do seem similar.

Yes (I think)

Both look very similar to me. I don't know the species from New Mexico, so I can't say if it's one or two species, but I think both are from the same genera. For be sure, a picture from the under of the insects would be needed.

I'll redouble my efforts

to shoot histerid undersides in the future. I could have gotten some good views of the specimens once they were pickled in alcohol, but instead I moved on to the next batch of beetles and these specimens were given to NMSU. I suppose the best thing would be to capture some live shots, then do some photo montage shots of the dead beetle in different views to produce fully in-focus, highly detailed dorsal and underside views. Maybe this winter I'll build the focusing rail system I really need to do montage work.
