Artichoke Plume Moth
Possible this is an artichoke plume moth? I also have pictures of one exactly like this and a picture of a much smaller one that is rather more colorful, but its face makes it look like it has had a very rough night out on the town.

I've seen these around, too.
Always wondered how they actually fly...

Actually, it's a moth. :-)
Your first guess was right - this is a Pterophorid moth, also known as the Plume Moth. I took a photo of a similar-looking Plume Moth the other day, but as you can see, I don't know what species it is either. Gonna do some research and see if I can ID it to Genus.
