Eristalis tenax
Even one can't see the row of hairs very well that are supposed to be on the eyes of E. tenax, I still think this is E. tenax. But on the first picture one can see the black facial stripe, which rules out arbustorum. Also from the size given, because arbustorum is a smaller species.
Greetings,

E. tenax
Hi Gerard, thanks so much for the info and confirmation. Sandy&Lloyd

Eristalis arbustorum?
Looks more like E. arbistorum

Eristalis sp.
Hi Adalbert. Thanks for your reply. I checked out photos and comments for both species and see that E. arbustorum has a white face and E. tenax has hairs going from top to bottom of face. The first photo in our series is the only one where you can see the face and it looks like it has the hairs going up and down. Our fly was about 1/2 inch. Any more specific info is appreciated. Thanks, Sandy
