Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - male

Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - Male
Fews Ford Section, Eno River State Park, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
October 9, 2004
Males were flying up into the air and making brief crepitating flights from patches of bare dirt. This was adjacent to an old-field type habitat with abundant broomsedge--Andropogon. I presume this is a male because it had been making such flights.

Nice.
Nice shot. We could use this, or even a more lateral angle showing the pronotal crest, for the field guide.

Only shot, will try for another
I only got two shots of this flighty critter, both at pretty much the. I'll try for another one before the weather gets bad--see if they are still flying around after work. (Yet another tropical storm system is headed our way--it is so soggy here that the mud can't get any muddier.)

Don't go to too much trouble:-)
Don't drown out there, Patrick:-) I have specimens we can shoot, and my co-author may not agree to including this sp anyway.
