Dobsonfly (DIN107) - Corydalus cornutus

Dobsonfly (DIN107) - Corydalus cornutus
Great Falls, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
June 17, 2006
Size: perhaps 2 inches
Found about 50 feet from the Potomac River about 4 inches off ground early morning. Checked fishfly and dobsonfly photos and didn't find one with the light body or wings folded back - perhaps it just emerged over night.

Corydalus
Fred-

Very nice photos. What you have is a close relative of the fishfly (subfamily Chauliodinae). However, it is actually a dobsonfly (subfamily Corydalinae). It appears to be a female of genus Corydalus, which are characterized by white spots in the cells of their forewings. The cells are the spaces delineated by the longitudinal- and cross-veins of the wing.

dobsonfly
Roger: Thanks. Never seen one before.

Fred

Maybe a stonefly
Has wing venation of stonefly. Might be Roachfly (short cerci). I might be wrong.
Cheers,

Mayfly
Wings folded back is typical of mayflies, Order Ephemeroptera.

Two inch
If this is a Mayfly then surely the two inches is considerably off? I don't think I've ever seen a Mayfly that approached two inches in length.

Good point
I was going on superficial resemblance, and could easily be completely wrong. The size range mentioned on the guide page only goes to 32 mm.

The lack of cerci should have given me pause, if nothing else.

I'll have to be more careful about putting question marks in my speculative IDs

Size
It was very large, but I didn't measure it. If a mayfly,it's bigger than any I've seen. A fisherman who came by told me he thought it was a fishfly. I will put up a front view, which shows the mouth parts.
