Interesting Unknown Bug... - Arilus cristatus

Interesting Unknown Bug... - Arilus cristatus
Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland, USA
September 24, 2006
Size: 2" x 2" w/o antenna
I've lived in MD all my life and I've never seen anything like this at all. From a distance I thought it was a wolf spider but on closer inspection I can't even figure out where to start searching this site to find something similar. I was amazed at how still it was - even when I put my camera just inches from it to take the picture. I don't think it moved once.

Moved
Moved from True Bugs.

Wheel Bug - Arilus cristatus
It's a Wheel Bug, a type of Assassin Bug.

Be careful - they bite!

....Ed....

And a nice shot of one, too!
I saw one only once, and it was in Great Falls, MD side.
