Wasp 2 - Stizus brevipennis

Wasp 2 - Stizus brevipennis

Another problem child. I thought this was a Cicada Killer but it doesn't match with our images.

Moved
Moved from Digger Wasps.

Moved
to Sphecidae until we get a species page.

wasp
perhaps a Stizus species... i can say that because of this

Looks like
more than one of us scratching our heads!

wasp
yeah, i think we were a little baffled, perhaps with your excellent pictures the mystery will be put to rest. i guess you are in the east as well, so if it is our one Stizus species, S. brevipennis, they do not have a guide page yet.

Quality of these new pictures...
prove at least one thing: this time, the special marginal cell of forewings is quite visible on the second picture, where this male (antennae are longer ar thinner than on "your" female specimen") is seen from above.
I would definitely lean for Stizus brevipennis, because Stizoides species tend to have a more slender outline. But, only seeing reference specimens, e.g. in a Museum collection, would "put the mystery at rest".

What subfamily?
I would be happy to create genus and species pages for this one but I need to know the subfamily first. Is it Nyssoninae? Thanks for your help.

subfamily
that is the correct subfamily, i have some photos of one of these floating around in the family without a home as well.
