I turned over a piece of landscaping timber in my yard and uncovered a colony of (I think) Carpenter Ants,
Camponotus. It was a little cool, and the ants seemed disoriented. I was able to get a number of photos. This one shows winged reproductives (males?), and both "major" and "minor" workers.
Other photos of this colony:
The species does
not seem to be C. pennsylvanicus, the Black Carpenter Ant. Perhaps it is C. ferrugineus, or C. castaneus (castanea), both listed by Brimley
(1) from this area. See
Washington DC Biodiversity for C. castanea. They were very large, especially the major workers, about 20 mm.
