Orange and Black Wasp - Scolia dubia - female

Orange and Black Wasp - Scolia dubia - Female
Omaha Botanical Gardens, Omaha, NE, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA
September 26, 2006
Size: approximately 1 1/4"
This large, hairy wasp was photographed in an area with lots of goldenrod and asters. After cropping noticed the extreme amount of hair on this wasp.

Any help with ID appreciated!

Thanks,

probably a Scolia dubia, there were a great number around here mid-summer... not so many now. they seem to love the goldenrod.

Agreed.
I agree with Edward, and will add that this is a female (for a change). Males are often far more abundant on flowers.

Thanks Edward and Eric!
We appreciate your help.
