Large green oriental marked spider - Araneus bicentenarius

Large green oriental marked spider - Araneus bicentenarius
Fayette, Fayette County, Alabama, USA
July 3, 2013
Size: 1" body, 2-3" w/legs
Found this spider in the middle of a web that is bigger than a serving dish plate for a family of 10!! They come out at night (never see them in the day) and if you blow on them they bounce the web. It is the biggest specimen I have ever seen. I dont know what they are, or if they are dangerous. I walk through their webs all the time, which freaks me out, but had NO idea they got this big. The spider did not seem aggressive unless it was restrained. If not being restrained it would not be defensive, just wandered off to get back in a tree somewhere.

I have these in the woods around my home and they can indeed be impressive. I've seen webs with support lines stretching 20+ feet. They catch just about anything that flies into their web, but they seem equipped to also handle things such as large moths, butterflies and dragonflies. I've seen a few tackle some big prey. They can be intimidating, but they are quite beautiful and very gentle.

Ya she was very gentle unless
Ya she was very gentle unless restrained which is understandable. She then would bite into the blanket, but let go once I let her go. She did not struggle at all for the close up face shots, I was surprised. I am very arachnophobia, though the more I learn about them the better I get. Its actually the smaller the spider the more fear I have, maybe cause I cant see it, then my mind starts wandering. This gal I know for sure was not on me when I let her go, and these dont usually come in your house. I am terrified of those little house spiders. LOL
