What is this? - Blatta orientalis
Chicago, Illinois, USA
December 31, 1969
Size: about 1/2 to 1 inch
found in kitchen on floor near stove, also on floor near raditor. I found what appeared to be a baby one smashed in my microwave door and one inside the microwave as well as one baby one on a cotton ball. There also were 4 of them stuck inside of a pot in my kitchen that had a collander on top trapping them in there. They must of fallen in when they were small and could fit through the wholes. Which means they grew to this size in about 2 weeks. So fast growing as well??? As I can not imagine how else they got in the pan. They had to fall through the collander wholes. I have lived in my house for 2 years and have only seen these recently. What are they and more importantly how do I kill them?

looks like
a cockroach, I would use the bait gel they sell at hardware and outdoor lawn supply stores, it works wonders for them, they tried to make a home out of my garage once.... the bait took care of the killing and the ants took care of the rest! LOL

I suspected that it may be an oriental cockaroach. But most of what I read said they can not climb vertical smooth surfaces so I am confused as to how one got in my microwave and some other areas. I do not see alot of them. Thank goodness. I sprayed behind my stove and fridge and under my sink with Hot Shot and this seems to be killing them. I also read that if you take 20 mule borax and mix it 50/50 with powdered sugar and push it into the crackes etc that will kill them. Has anyone else tried that? It is suppose to be a safer option if you have pets.

Yes.
It is most likely an oriental roach, a nymph or a female. The boric acid in the Boraxo product is the killing agent, something the roaches cannot detect before they ingest the mixture, unlike other poisons that the roaches taste, then avoid. They generally enter homes via plumbing.
