Giant Waterbug - Lethocerus

Giant Waterbug - Lethocerus
Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana, USA
September 27, 2006
Found this guy in my backyard with my Minpin and two Rottweilers going crazy around it. It was unable to flip itself right-side up.

Hide'n toes here
Yeah it sure looks like the Giant Water Bug (Lethocerus americanus) I found in my paint shop a while back. Check that link and see what you think.

Thanks..
Lucky me, I obviously did not know what it was and handled it quite a bit without getting bit before letting it go. Actually, once it flew away from me in the house is when I decided it was time to say bye bye. I found it in the backyard, where my Minpin and two Rottweilers were barking at it. It seemed injured or something when I found it so I put it in a tupperware bowl with some lettuce and a few drops of water. About an hr later, it obviously felt much better. Yikes!

You're a brave one
lol . . . I didn't handle the one I saw . . . I just took a few pics and let him be on his way. :D

Toe-biter was my first thought, too -
Youch!

I agree
I agree, one of the Giant Water Bugs.

Yep, these things are pretty
Yep, these things are pretty cool! I play college soccer in Worcester, MA and these guys are on our turf field fairly often. I've picked up a few before learning about their painful bite, but luckily they're pretty peaceful. 2 of them were fried on the turf last week on a particularly hot day as well...everyone on my team was creeped out when i picked em up haha.
