Spider Wasp - Anoplius

Spider Wasp - Anoplius
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
September 26, 2006
At this time of the year there seem to be a lot of insects with red or orange abdomens. I don't recall seeing any of these insects earlier in the year. Have I just been unobservant and not seen any earlier in the spring and summer or do they normally appear in the late summer and fall? Just curious to see if anyone else has noticed this.

Anoplius
Thanks. Hope I get to find one of these wasps again this year so I can try to get some better photos.

Pompilid
perhaps Anoplius splendens or semirufus, just a guess... at any rate i would leave this up until Mr. Fensler happens upon it.

Spider wasp.
This is a spider wasp in the family Pompilidae. Not sure what genus or species, but Nick Fensler will have a more informed opinion I'm sure:-)

Anoplius...
Without clear views of the wings it is hard to even narrow down to subgenus. Probably a species in the subgenus Arachnophroctonus or Pompilinus.
