Sparnopolius
This is Sparnopolius confusus, the only northeastern member of the genus.

Thanks for the move joel, just curious, how did you recognize this from the other bee flies that might inhabit the chicago area?

 
Sparnopolius
The yellow hairs covering the body, the relatively short, upturned proboscis, the general body shape, and the wing venation (although somewhat difficult to see) all point to Sparnopolius. The most similar alternatives would be Bombylius and Systoechus species, which have different wing venation and much longer proboscises.
