Size: ~35-40mm
Solid black g-hopper with bright orangish-red wings when flying. Pretty distinct critter - anybody have an IDea?

Red-winged Hopper?
I think you may have a Northwestern red-winged or just plain red-winged grasshopper (
Arphia pseudonietana
)here. A lot are more of a mottled brown colour, but black forms can apparently occur. Here are links to a couple of photos I was able to find of the darker variants (scroll down on the first link--first image may not show)...
