Mystery Beetle - Leptinotarsa haldemani

Baboquivari Mts, Pima County, Arizona, USA
September 29, 2006
Size: ~7-9mm

Several of these (maybe 10) eating leaves of small Woolfberry (Lycium). I'm guessing a Chrysomelid, but could easily be something else. It would be good if someone who knows beetles filled in the blank I'm drawing. Will post another, probably different individual.

Timarcha

No...this is not Chrysochus. This beetle is in the subfamily Chrysomelinae; not in Eumolpinae. In think it is a species in the genus Timarcha

Leptinotarsa.

I'm envious again:-) I've only taken one of these here in Arizona, and, beleive it or not they're in the genus Leptinotarsa (related to the Colorado potato beetle)!

I´ll believe you....

Didn´t really fit Timarcha for its blue shine, but I couldn´t think of any other all dark Chrysomelinae. Thanks for your id Eric...do you know what species in Leptinotarsa...would be new for the guide.

I'm no expert, but check these out.

Also, color of the back 2/3 of yours reminds me of cobalt milkweed beetle, but I don't think it's the same:

Thanks for the

input Ron. Looks very close except for mine with black head and pronotum, and possibly a little shorter antennae. Still looks close enough maybe to be a congener. Hope one of the beetle pros weighs in. Oh, yea, reflection is me - you can tell by my statuesque beauty. Good eye for detail; I could've looked at that a hundred times and not seen it.
