Villa? - Villa lateralis

Villa? - Villa lateralis
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 13, 2013
This bee fly was visiting California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum) in coastal sage scrub at the Claremont Colleges' Bernard Field Station. I am pretty sure it is Villa sp., and I gather that in general we are not even trying to identify Villa to species. Confirmation of the genus and any thoughts on species will be most appreciated!

Moved
Moved from Villa, on the basis of Andy Calderwood's comment here. I accept Andy's word as definitive!

Yes, Villa sp. is correct.
At one time, this would have been IDed as Villa lateralis. I've been told - forget by whom - that species IDs are not currently being given.

From the BG Info page:
"This genus has not been reviewed in NA since Coquillett (1892) and needs revision based on genitalic characters. Outside of some better-known local faunas, identification to species is difficult and tentative at best."

Thanks!
Thanks, Ron! Just as I thought. I would previously have said Villa lateralis, but now it's just Villa sp. I hope someone sorts out the taxonomy sometime soon.
