Crane Fly - Tipula

Crane Fly - Tipula
Central Park, New York County, New York, USA
June 16, 2005
We've seen several of these crane flies in Central Park, usually when they land on low vegetation. Any ID help is appreciated. Thanks, Sandy&Lloyd

It is most likely a female of
Tipula (Platytipula) paterifera , but recently there are two European Tipula species have worked their way into the northeast of USA and have been reported in New York state. Check here for more info . A male fly would be helpful to do a species level id, moved it to the subgenus page. - Chen
