Mites?

Joel, your reaction is interesting.
I find this photo hard to look at, but not personally affecting. On the other hand, flies with fungus make my skin crawl.

Mostly it bothers me because the mites move so fast, and relative to the beetles size, they're pretty large. I just imagine what it'd be like to be the beetle, with about a dozen of these mites just clinging to you no matter what you try. Yech.
It's obvious the beetle doesn't enjoy it either, a few times during photography, the mites were on the beetles head, crawling between its jaws and antennae and the beetle would try to clean its face, but the mties would just transfer onto the legs. It's so strange to watch.
