Eleodes? - Cryptoglossa variolosa

Eleodes? - Cryptoglossa variolosa
Between Mesa and Apache Junction, Maricopa/Pima County Line County, Arizona, USA
August 25, 2006
Size: About 1 1/4" long
I found this beetle in the dirt where I had dug up a prickly pear cactus. It acted almost dead. Very stiff; hardly any movement. It had a lot of dirt on it, and wanting to get a better look at it, I put some water on it to wash it off. Before I got much of the dirt off, it "woke up." (I'm thinking there could have been some "possum playing" going on here...) It started walking around, but would act stiff again if disturbed. Would stay in the headstand as shown in the photo for several seconds. I didn't notice any odor. When undisturbed, it ambled off, seemed to be looking in the rocks for something -- maybe dinner.

Hi Su,
looks similar to

I've seen several in the foothills of Mts all around Tucson.

Tenebrionidae: Cryptoglossa sp. ?
OK, thanks, I agree. It seems that Cryptoglossa are also known as Death-feigning beetles, which certainly fits the behavior of my beetle. I should note that the headstand wasn't exactly done on its own. I was moving him around and he seemed to "get stuck" in this position!

Looks
similar, but as I'm no expert, you might want to wait until one of the beetle pros weighs in before it's confirmed.

Cryptoglossa sp.
They are common in southeastern Arizona and into New Mexico.
