Mating - Polistes dominula - male - female

Mating - Polistes dominula - Male Female
Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
July 22, 2013
Mating on a nest in captivity. The nest started with two foundresses that were collected with a small nest in Medicine Hat on May 16, 2013, and is now being kept at the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton. Note how the male has wrapped its left antenna around the left antenna of the female. Mating on the nest is probably rare in the wild.
