Cochineal Habitat - Dactylopius

Cochineal Habitat - Dactylopius
Santiago Oaks Park, Orange, Orange County, California, USA
October 2, 2006
These prickly pear are near a creek and across from an oak grove. I've never cochineal so thick in one place; it almost looks like a huge amount of bird droppings. Apparently, the cochineal started towards the center of this cactus patch, as that section seems the whitest and most near decomposition. Cacti to the left, in a somewhat shadier spot, seem less affected.

In additon to cochineal, small wasps and ladybird beetles frequent the site.

The three photos in this series move progressively towards the insects.
