Hornworm - Sphinx kalmiae

Hornworm - Sphinx kalmiae
Chatsworth, Grey, Ontario, Canada
July 22, 2013
Size: ~2" long
Found in the grass, not on this tree. Lilac, maple, apple, sumac, and other trees were nearby, as well as extensive perennial beds and a bunch of planted garlic so I don't know the host plant.

The tail is palish blue with black bumps. Diagonal slashes are yellow with black above them.

Thanks in advance!

Very nice photo. This individual may have been found while it was wandering to find a pupation site.

Out of the plants you list, lilac is a common host to this species.
