Phidippus otiosus - female

Phidippus otiosus - Female
Snowhill Road north of Cabin Branch Creek, Treyburn area, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 2, 2006
Size: 16 mm body
Detail of head, etc. I love the greenish paturons (part of the chelicerae, to which fangs are attached--see discussion--I hope I've got this correct).

Greenish
I think we call those chelicerae. They are actually the fang covers and not part of the jaws. And what a fine shot.

???
Interesting comment, Herschel.
The chelicerae are the jaws. The green area is the paturons (as defined in any credible spider publication), to which the fangs are attached. Example

Well
I passed on misleading information that was passed on to me. Which was that the chelicerae, including the paturons, were separate from the jaw structures. They actually are jaw structures but are also the fang covers and the green shining items on several of the Phids. I did not know the paturon term previously.

Thanks!
Thanks for education on the proper term, and thanks for the compliment.
It was a pretty cooperative subject, while confined in a white serving bowl. The hairiness was helpul as a focusing aid for my 65mm manual focus macro lens--great results if you can see to focus and get light on the subject at the close working distances.
I'm enthusiastic about doing some work on spiders, especially jumpers. I'll be looking for them now.

Wonderful
Awesome photo!!!!!
