Black & Yellow Wasp and Black & Yellow Caterpillar - Monobia quadridens - female

Black & Yellow Wasp and Black & Yellow Caterpillar - Monobia quadridens - Female
Baton Rouge, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 25, 2013
Size: wasp 2 cm
Caterpillar 3 cm long.
First noticed by Jeff & Carol Newell.
Wasp acting strangely on trail, uncovered a caterpillar hiding under a dead leaf.
We watched for 35 minutes as the wasp first stung the caterpillar many times and then tried to position it properly for lifting/takeoff.
Tried and tried to find the proper center of gravity, but failed each time.
Often wasp tumbled over as the limp caterpillar would droop on partial liftoff.
Caterpillar seem just too heavy.
Caterpillar seems a lot like this one (??):

There was Carolina Moonseed, Carolina Snailseed, Coralbead, Cocculus carolinus at the edge of the trail.
