Insect Eggs?

Insect Eggs?
Houghton, Michigan, USA
July 15, 2013
I found this black mass on a piece of grass and I was wondering if they were eggs of an insect. The mass had a
glossy sheen to it. It was found on a sandy two-track bordered by maple trees on each side of the road. The time
was 4:00 p.m. The location is in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Lake Superior.
