Widow Skimmer - Libellula luctuosa - female

Widow Skimmer - Libellula luctuosa - Female
Kittery, at Green Art Sculpture Garden, York County, Maine, USA
July 21, 2013
this beautiful creature sat down on the handle of my wheelbarrow when I was finally able to capture it on photo. I though for a second it had lost its front legs, but realized they are pulled up - it seems to be ready to strike its prey. Is this a typical behavior?
And I have no clue which dragonfly it is.

Female Widow Skimmer
