fly or cicada? - Alphina glauca

fly or cicada? - Alphina glauca
Orange County, North Carolina, USA
June 12, 2002

Thanks for the help!
Wow first eastern US record, very cool. Never seen another one. I will keep an eye out next year.

Alphina glauca
This is the first eastern record of this large Fulgorid - previously it was known only as far east as Mississippi. Unlike other eastern Fulgoridae, its head is narrower than the thorax.

Definitely a Homopteran (Hemiptera)
Not a fly. It looks like a Fulgoromorph, so not a cicada (which is a Cicadomorph, and has enlarged fore tibiae). I would guess it is one of our few Fulgoridae, but I have never seen one this color. Have to wait until someone who knows can chime in. Great pic!

Another lovely image!
Can you give a sense of size, even just approximate, by filling in the field for size. Same with date? Although if the date is only approximate, you will have to put it in the comment section since the date field always wants an exact day! Easy to do by clicking on Edit on this image. We're eager to see the ID you get on this beauty!

date
John and Jane,

This one skipped data tags for some reason. The date was June 12, 2002 and it looks like it came to my melon rinds or visited with the other bugs. I'd think it was horsefly size maybe larger.
