perky little stennine - Stenus

perky little stennine - Stenus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 3, 2006
Size: about 3.9 mm
This globe-eyed little rove beetle landed on a board near me and came home in my pocket vial. This might be in the very speciose genus St*enus, but I have placed it at the subfamily level. It appears to have very short, white bristles over most of its dorsum, which seems odd for a rove beetle.

This is the 3,000th image I have posted on bugguide but in fairness, a few I have posted have been other contributors' images that I have modified to better show features or color.

Moved
Moved from Steninae.

subgenus Hypostenus
key characters: abdomen not bordered laterally, tarsi not much longer than half of tibia, penultimate tarsal segment bilobate.

Nice pics, should allow for ID, unless one has a key to nearctic species.

cheers, Boris

Thanks, Boris.
Bugguide was not set up to handle subgenus level and only shows genus in the photo title and "Stenus Hypostenus" in the taxonomy string above the image. However, if you click on the taxonomy tab, if will show "No Taxon: Hypostenus." Maybe with someone's help I can get it to species.

Congratulations on your milestone, Jim
What a body of work! Nice image here and very informative, as usual.

Thanks, Ron.
I notice some of the newer contributors are loading a lot of images. They'll be up in the thousands before you know it. None of us is likely to catch up with Tom Murray, however. He's over 7,000, heading for 8,000. Lynette Schimming has over 3,100.

As one of the newer contributors...
Congratulations, I hope that I can reach the same level of quality and thoroughness that you have.

Since 9/16/06, I've posted 287 images ;)

Yes,
you're one of several I had in mind, Cheryl. Good work!

John Davis of Stevenson WA has posted 845 since April 17 of this year.

Ron Hemberger has posted 912 since March 19, 2006.

An interesting read.
Starts to sound like baseball records. Two of us are working on a natural history website with about 400 images, and we thought we were doing well.
