Blister Beetles? - Meloe campanicollis

Blister Beetles? - Meloe campanicollis
Toms River, New Jersey, USA
October 23, 2004
I've been seeing quite a few of theses around the house in the last two weeks.

prob. Meloe campanicollis Pinto & Selander based on date
John Pinto det.

Moved from Oil Beetles.

Yes:-)
Blister beetles indeed, genus Meloe, male atop female. Note his "kinked" antennae. They are parasites of solitary bees, especially Anthophora sp.

Neat Defense Mechanism
I sometimes find these guys close to where we walk so I move them to a safe spot. When picked up they emit an orangish fluid from their joints. I guess it's a toxic chemical defense.

Clear Skies,

Steve
