Giant Agave Bug on Baccharis - Acanthocephala thomasi - male

Giant Agave Bug on Baccharis - Acanthocephala thomasi - Male
Florida Canyon Station, Santa Rita Experimental Range, Pima County, Arizona, USA
July 25, 2013
Giant Agave Bug (Acanthocephala thomasi) on Baccharis. From the McPherson et al(1), the straight inner flange on the hind tibiae (see last image) indicates this is a male.

The paper:

Jones, W.A. (1993) New host and habitat associations for some Arizona Pentatomoidea and Coreidae. Southwestern Entomologist Supplement, 16, 1–29. (PDF here)

...states that in Madera Canyon, on Aug. 20, 1991, one very large shrub of Baccharis sarothroides harbored 77 adults of Acanthocephala thomasi. Most of the bugs were on the lower parts of the main stems, usually in pairs, sometimes in groups of 3-8.

Other host plants given for this bug in Jones (1993) are: Agave shawi, Agave palmeri, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Prosopsis velutina, and Yucca elata.
