Id help needed - Phyciodes tharos - Female
Merritt Island, Brevard County, Florida, USA
February 11, 2013
Using the Kaufman guide this appears to me to be a Northern cresent ( Phyciodes cocyta ). The range of this butterfly is not even remotely close to Florida. Is the guide wrong ? Is my id wrong ? Hurricane Sandy blew in many birds to the east coast from Europe ( I am an avid birder also ), could Sandy have blown this butterfly ( if it is a Northern cresent ) to Florida ( Timeline is also questionable. Sandy came ashore on October 29th. Could this butterfly live approximately 4 months ? ) I am interested in any input. Thanks again for your help in advance, Henry.
