Mason Wasp - Ancistrocerus - female

Mason Wasp - Ancistrocerus - Female
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 8, 2004
Feeding on goldenrod. Compare Euodynerus at Insects of Cedar Creek. Eric Eaton states this is more likely an Ancistrocerus, due to the more elongated abdomen. See Insects of Cedar Creek, Ancistrocerus. OK, I see the abdominal shape thing. Interesting.

Ancistrocerus - female
All the visible features (overall shape, setting of the yellow spots and bands, pilosity and so on) on both photograph perfectly match
the holarctic species Ancistrocerus antilope.
This mason wasp is very fond of goldenrod here in Switzerland too. The sharp contrast between the yellow hind tibia and the nearly black hind metatarsus is especially striking.
Even if another, very closely related North American species cannot be excluded, this insect belongs, with absolute certainty, to Ancistrocerus. The shape of the first abdominal tergite is quite different in all Euodynerus species.

Thanks, will move to that genus
Great, I'll move it.

Funny, goldenrod is introduced in Switzerland, isn't it?

Goldenrod is a "goldmine" for Vespid amateurs
Two North-American species of Solidago (S. canadensis, S. gigantea) are nowadays quite widespread in western and central Europe. They are a very valuable source of nectar in late summer and early autumn, not only for mason or potter wasps, but for paper wasps (Polistes) too, not to speak of many short-tongued bees.
