Psorophora ciliata - male

Psorophora ciliata - Male
El Dorado Springs, Missouri, USA
August 14, 2013
Size: 3/4in
Looked like a big mosquito or small crane fly. I've never seen the pair of feathery that parallel the probiscus from the front of the head in addition to the plumose antennae.

Johnston's organ
The males use that plumose appendage (Johnston's Organ) off of the antennae to among other things, detect wing beats of females. It is a type of mechano-receptor. As usual in biology, it all leads back to sex.
