This appears to be a Leaf-footed Bug (Acanthocephala terminalis) found in an open field at Geode State Park in Henry county, Iowa

Identification
As of May 1, 2005, the image details have been updated to reflect the correct identifaction of Acanthocephala terminalis.

Acanthocephala terminalis
According to this PDF doc from the University of Florida, A. confraterna is known only from Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. Your specimen must be A. terminalis, the only species of Acanthocephala that occurs in the northeastern states (north and west of North Carolina).
