Orange-barred Sulphur - Phoebis philea - female

Orange-barred Sulphur - Phoebis philea - Female
Gainesville, Florida, USA
October 26, 2004
Just emerged. Observed in flight, the hind wings have a band of orange along the lower edge.

Thanks
Beautiful. And I see another chrysalis in the background. Thanks for the ID help.

I don't remember exactly
but the one in the background might be a Cloudless Sulphur - I was raising several species at that time.

strange
The foreground one looks like the one I photographed that we just IDed as an Orange-Barred, but the chrysalis in the background looks more like what mine came from. Hrm.

They are extremely similar, being in the same family.
Cloudless sulphur pupae are a bit smaller, and the ones I've seen lack the white spot I've seen on Orange-barred pupae. There's certainly no question about the ID of your butterfly.
I don't remember well enough to be sure of the ID of this pupa (in the background here), but I vaguely recall I had only one orange-barred caterpillar at that time. I know I took a picture of three sulphur pupae together - Orange-barred, Cloudless and Sleepy Orange -just for the size comparison. I took that picture on 10/26/04, so I know I had pupae of all three spp. at the time I photographed this one.
