Pseudodoros clavatus
In the Syrphids of America there are a few genera with such a petiolate and thin abdomen.
For example: the genera Ocyptamus, Allograpta, Leucopodella, Baccha (should be written this way!) and Pseudodoros.
After studying the picture this seems like this last genus, with just one species: Pseudodoros clavatus.
Characteristic are the antennae which are quite close together, and the yellow scutellum with the broad transverse black band!
This is a male!

Thanks, Gerard
I have the immature stages on this site too and will move all to this guide - perhaps the immatures will confirm the ID?

Bacca unlikely
Could be, but all the Bacca (Baccha?) I know of have some kind of spotting on the wings. The body shape is slightly different also. Nice images, so somebody should eventually be able to ID it.

But not actually blue, I think
that's the poor light - I took its picture indoors after brief chilling, but when I carried it outdoors for better light it warmed up and flew away!
