Psilonyx annulatus - male

Psilonyx annulatus - Male
San Felasco Hammock, Ceylon Creek, Alachua County, Florida, USA
July 13, 2005
Size: 9 mm
Found along a shaded sandy stream. These guys hunt a lot like damselflies, hovering and frequently attacking potential motionless prey. I took this photo and then collected a specimen last year, though I did not key it out until now. Though widespread, I do not believe Psilonyx annulatus has been recorded from Florida. Identifying features include relatively short halteres, the lack of Empodium, genitalia and gonoforceps like P. annulatus (rather distinctive), and a sharply angulate median crossvein (m-m) wing vein.
