Unknown egg cases or cocoons - Anthidium

Unknown egg cases or cocoons - Anthidium
Brush Prairie, Clark County, Washington, USA
August 20, 2013
Size: 1/2 inch
I found these 'egg cases/cocoons'? inside the ornament shown. It was hanging outdoors and was stuffed full of a cotton like substance. There were six egg cases inside the cotton. Inside the egg cases was a single beast, white but not developed enough to be sure what it is. The second picture is one of the cases with the cotton fiber removed which came off like a skin and was easy to remove. Its kind of creepy not knowing what it is. Never seen anything like this before. Didn't see any insects paying attention to the ornament before discovering the contents. I have them in a jar waiting for them to hatch and see what they are.

I think you are right
I have a little trouble using this site but finally got to the wool carder bee and it fits. We have noticed a variety of bees this year a couple of which we hadn't noticed before. Will be watching for this one. Of note is the worms were up on the sides of the mulch barrel yesterday and gone today.

Thank you!
Dan

I'll post a picture if they make it. Don't see why they wouldn't. With all the cotton like insulation around them, I wonder if it won't be until next spring........
