Red Soldier Beetle - Rhagonycha fulva

Red Soldier Beetle - Rhagonycha fulva
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
July 20, 2006
Size: ~7mm long
I found this beetle patrolling my cherry tree trunk. The measurement may be a little too long, but it's close.
The cherry tree has a lot of carpenter ants and slave ants, as well as wood-borers of some sort (have only seen the holes w/frass, so far).

False false blister beetle!
In fact, a soldier beetle and a recent introduction from Europe: Rhagonycha fulva.

All Oedemerids resembling this one have the pronotum less flat, and are of about double size.

regards, Boris

Cool, Thanks!
I found this species a couple of times this year...maybe I'll get better photos in 2007.

Moved from Rhagonycha.

Don't think so.
This reminds me more of the "wharf borer," genus Nacerdes, in the family of false blister beetles (Oedemeridae). Hard to tell fore certain from this image, though.

OK,
I'll move it up to the Coleoptera page.

Oedemeridae
It's hard to said if it's a Nacerdes sp. or a Rhagonycha sp., but it sure is an Oedemeridae. You can move it too this family page.

Thanks!
I will do that. Maybe next year, I'll get to photograph another one, now that I'm getting better at it.
