Datana sp. - Datana major

Datana sp. - Datana major
Gautier, Jackson County, Mississippi, USA
October 13, 2006
Size: 55 mm
Found on azaleas by D. Held. We are trying to rear them as they appear different from the azalea moth caterpillars (white spots and bands instead of yellow).

Moved
Moved from Datana.

Exciting that you will rear them.
Take pictures as the later instars develop. This will make a great series to see if they become yellow-spotted and then later yellow-striped. Datana major looks good, but we are always finding the world is more complicated than we think!

Later instars
The caterpillar in the photo is almost ready to pupate. We have about 30 caterpillars in various instars, and they are all black with white markings, so I don't think they will change to yellow. I'll keep an eye on them though.
